Compact suv delivers affordable capability. introductionthe jeep patriot is unmistakably from the jeep garage, with its squared-off lines, seven-slot grille, and round headlights. The patriot and its sibling, the jeep compass, are based on a car platform, but still deliver moderate off-road ability.  for 2011, jeep patriot has been significantly updated. The 2011 patriot features fresh styling, upgraded suspension and steering, new interior materials, and a revised model lineup. There's adult-size headroom and legroom for rear-seat passengers. The smaller engine is 2. 0 liters, makes 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque and is epa-rated at 23/29 mpg with the manual transmission. The optional continuously variable transaxle works well and we found the auto stick manual-shift feature useful.  we found the patriot light and nimble on twisty roads and when maneuvering around town. The independent suspension works well. During a long day of driving on patchy two-lanes, hard-packed dirt roads, sandy off-road trails, shallow rivers and deep gullies, it delivered steadiness and comfort in every abusive situation.  the patriot is available with front-wheel drive or a choice of two all-wheel-drive systems, one that jeep qualifies as trail rated. Those who like to go off the pavement (or tow more than 1000 pounds) should choose the trail-rated freedom ii awd system. All-wheel drive versions also have the 2. 4-liter engine and rear disc brakes. Options include front side airbags 250), 17-inch aluminum wheels 640), air conditioning 895), media center radio 350), and the power value package 1,405) with remote keyless entry, power windows/door locks/heated mirrors. The freedom ii off-road group 550) upgrades 4wd models with a bigger alternator, skid plates, electronic traction assists, tow hooks, floor mats, p215/65r17 tires and full-size spare; it requires the cvt2l automatic transmission 1050). Torso-protecting front side impact airbags are an option we recommend. walkaroundthe patriot has jeep's favorite styling cues, namely round headlights and seven vertical openings for a grille, in a boxy shape with fairly upright windshield and hatch. On patriot latitude x models much trim is done in bright surfaces but we find the body-color trim of the other models more appealing, and more befitting a jeep. Tow hooks and roof-rail crossbars are optional, and we'd prefer the fog lamps were further apart.  eschewing trends to make everything lower and more car-like, the 2011 patriot rides a little bit higher than the 2010 version and it has half-an-inch more ground clearance. To that end the rear bumper on the 2011 patriot is deeper and almost totally hides the muffler that looked like a large industrial afterthought on earlier versions.  the jeep patriot is considered a compact, although it looks larger. With a lot of space between front and rear wheels and overall length less than 15 feet, the lack of bodywork beyond the wheels adds dimension and improves backcountry accessibility. It's only a couple of inches from identical height and width and the ground clearance matches many heavy-duty pickup trucks.  the standard wheels are 16-inch steel. Attractive 17-inch aluminum wheels are standard on latitude and x models, and optional for the sport. The latitude x gets leather upholstery which previously seemed to overdress the patriot; it fits better in the revised 2011 interior but we're still adapting to jeep and leather in the same sentence.  interior materials have been revamped for 2011. The climate and sound system controls are easy to understand and operate. Jeep says the available uconnect tunes system can hold up to 6700 songs, which can be ripped from a cd or usb memory stick. We thought the doors sounded kind of tinny when they were closed.  the space between the seats includes a nook for change or cell phones, two fixed cupholders, and the parking brake lever. The center console is split for two levels of storage and is now padded.  the door pockets are on the small side, but they can hold six cd cases; much of the space is taken up by the 6x9-inch speakers. The door handles are easy to use. There's a nice tray over the good-sized glove compartment that's big enough for books.  the standard rear seat is a 60/40 split. It folds flat easily. Simply flip up the seat cushion and flop down the seatback. Reclining rear seats are optional, as is a flat-folding front passenger seat. With the rear seats folded flat, there's a spacious 54. 2 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Fold down the passenger seat, and the patriot has room for something eight feet long. With all the seats in use there's 23 cubic feet in the back, comparable with any compact suv.  the hatch glass does not open separately but the hatch itself isn't that heavy. A removable carpeted floor lines the cargo area and hides a real full-size spare tire underneath on most models. That cargo deck is a relatively high 31 inches off the floor so the maximum cargo height opening is 27. 4 inches, and taller people should watch their head beneath the open hatch. driving impressionthe jeep patriot comes with a choice of engines. The larger 2. 4-liter engine works best. It has good power, with 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque, and is responsive where it needs to be. The 2. 0-liter engine makes 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque and is epa-rated at 23/29 mpg with the manual transmission. The smaller engine needs to be revved quite a bit to make power, however. So for the minimal price difference and the extra torque, we recommend the larger 2. 4-liter engine.  the 5-. The rear-drives account for a small fraction of sales, but they get better fuel economy and claims of 30 mpg highway is worth a small fortune to jeep.  this is a sport-utility for a family of five. Trim varies from cloth upholstery and faux wood to piped, perforated leather with real open-pore wood and suede-like headliner. A variety of drive systems and two suspension arrangements are available.  chrysler's 3. 6-liter v6 engine is standard and more than sufficient for anything but heavy towing. For towing, they offer the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 and, at a higher price point, the new ecodiesel. With 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, the ecodiesel's effortless nature is ideal for a big-wheeled heavy box like this. The diesel's epa city rating matches the v8's highway rating; and epa ratings for diesels tend to the pessimistic side, counter to ratings for gasoline and hybrid vehicles.  the restyle applied to the 2014 grand cherokee gives it a cleaner, more integrated look, while sophistication increases with price. This steroidal performance wagon competes with the porsche cayenne, bmw x5m and x6m, mercedes-benz ml63 amg, and might get some audi sq5 or cadillac cts-v wagon shoppers. The only option is all-wheel drive and an e group. Limited options include the diesel and v8 engines, either of which is required for quadra-drive ii 4wd or air suspension. Srt features split the line between overland and summit, and options consist of three-season performance tires, full-size spare, carbon painted or black chrome split-spoke wheels, a panoramic moonroof, sepia cabin color, rear dvd, remote cd changer, uconnect access via mobile,19-speaker 825-watt harman kardon sound system, three-season pirelli p zero tires, tow package, and engine block heater.  safety equipment on all grand cherokee models includes electronic stability control with roll mitigation, abs with brake traction control system, trailer sway control, hill start assist, frontal airbags, front side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, driver knee airbag, active head restraints, and tire pressure monitor. Front lighting, wheel sizes and styles, and body-end sections vary among the jeep models. See below for srt specifics.  although the same size as its predecessor, the 2014 grand cherokee looks a bit trimmer, lighter, cleaner, less inflated. The clearances required for off-highway travel front, rear and underneath remain good. With the black plastic trim on the inside edge we thought jeep pulled them off the chrysler 300 but they are unique to the grand cherokee.  jeep's trademark seven-slot grille is now seven slots cut into a panel rather than a single grille, with black slats on most and the summit's lined with chrome mesh to mimic bentley and every other pretender. There's plenty of chrome on upper trims, while the entry model's simpler appearance looks more apropos jeep's mission statement. Some have dark tow hooks, the overland gets chrome and the summit doesn't have any.  at the other end all grand cherokees get led-ring taillights that echo the headlights, with clear-lens signals and backup lights that actually help the camera view. Replacing the big broad chrome name strip beneath the window with an inset jeep badge cut the pudgy factor notably. New v6 and 5-speed automatic improve streetability. introductionthe 2012 jeep wrangler is a game-changer because of its new powertrain that moves jeep out of the dark ages. It's the pentastar v6, new last year to chrysler, named one of ward's 10 best engines for 2011. The new engine makes considerably more power with slightly better fuel mileage, an epa-estimated 17 city/21 highway mpg. It's smaller, lighter, and more advanced than the engine it replaces.  a smooth new 5-speed automatic transmission for 2012 replaces last year's inadequate 4-speed. The transmission is well behaved and doesn't hunt for gears. It was designed for use with chrysler's 5. 7-liter hemi engine, so it maintains jeep-like industrial strength. The pentastar block was designed to have accessories bolted to it, to reduce vibration. This pays off with a smooth and silent interior, even at 80 mph in the hardtop wrangler. The wrangler unlimited corners well. The wrangler unlimited is built on a wheelbase that's 21 inches longer than that of the regular wrangler.  the soft top that comes standard slides and folds horizontally on the roof, leaving the occupants further protected by door and window frames, although there's already a rollbar. The available removable hardtop comes off in 3 pieces, like t-tops and a sunroof over the rear seat. It's a challenge to tune the radio by touch-screen in a bouncing jeep.  even with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the wrangler has to work hard on two-lanes. But a lack of neck-snapping acceleration must be compared to what it had before. And if it weren't an aerodynamic brick, it wouldn't be a jeep. There are seven boxed crossmembers in the chassis adding strength but weight. The rubicon with 5-speed automatic weighs an anvil-like 4130 pounds.  riding a rubicon in oregon's tillamook forest, we tackled a trail that looked impossible for a vehicle off the showroom floor. Later, another wrangler rubicon scarcely broke a sweat on rocky trails crossing peaks in washington's cascades. Running it hard, it averaged 18 mpg for us. All wranglers come standard with 4x4 and 6-speed manual transmission, with 5-speed automatic available.  the freedom top, a three-piece modular hard top, is available for all models. The wrangler sport is available in right-hand drive for rural mail carriers. No air conditioning, power windows, cruise control, 115-volt power outlet, or side steps.  wrangler sahara 27,970) adds air conditioning, keyless entry, power windows and door locks, 115-volt power outlet, infinity speakers with 368-watt amplifier, body-color hard top, body color fender flares, tubular side steps, heated power mirrors, bridgestone dueler p255/70/r18 tires on painted aluminum wheels.  wrangler rubicon 29,995) is equipped for off-road. Removable doors, roll-up windows, black fender flares, halogen headlamps, foglamps, soft top, air conditioning, 60/40 split rear bench, 600 amp battery.  wrangler unlimited sahara 30,745) adds body color fender flares, power heated mirrors, tubular side steps, remote keyless entry, power windows and door locks, sirius radio, upgraded sound system, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 115-volt outlet, and 18-inch painted aluminum wheels.  wrangler unlimited rubicon 33,570) comes with the same extra offroad equipment as the two-door rubicon, plus all the power equipment of the sahara.  safety equipment on all models includes electronic stability control with roll mitigation, hill start assist, trailer sway control, all-speed traction control, abs with brake assist, frontal and side airbags. walkaroundthe 2012 wrangler looks like a jeep, and when that can't be said, it's time to worry. The hardtop is $735 option; it comes off in 3 pieces, like t-tops and a sunroof over the rear seat. We spent a summer day on jeep trails in the northwest in a wrangler rubicon with all three parts removed, and it was fabulous. The body-colored hardtop is new to the rubicon in 2012. The soft top remains the sportiest in appearance. Standard colors are available for those who want to blend into the environment, whether suburban or bucolic. interiorthe jeep wrangler interior was revised and dressed up for 2011. There are no significant changes inside for 2012.  we lived in a hardtop wrangler for a week and it was all good, comfort-wise. Good rear legroom, easy to climb in and out. The rear 60/40 seat folds or can be removed to create 87 cubic feet of cargo space, comparable to a toyota 4runner.  the pentastar engine block was designed to have accessories bolted to it, to reduce vibration. And for all the 6. 5-inch size of the screen, with some functions only about 40 percent of the screen is used, tiny little radio words, the other 60 percent says jeep.  the navigation system in the media center is fairly simple in its display. It didn't make any errors on the routes we programmed, although finding the button to enter destination was maddening. It's a jeep-like choice.  we went trail climbing in oregon's tillamook forest with a wrangler rubicon. The standard for suvs is completely redesigned. introductionthe introduction of the all-new jeep grand cherokee represents a bold move by daimlerchrysler. Yet its proportions are completely different from before, with more steel and less glass, a laid-back windshield, the trademark giant wheel well flares, and a slickly angular body without the cladding of the previous generations; just one small spear. The d-pillar has been laid forward, which cuts into cargo space, but it sure looks cool. It's got a replaceable chin spoiler on it, and it looks mean. Inside, it's got nearly 70 cubic feet of storage and three modern, if not brand-new, powerplants.  interior materials are dramatically improved over the previous model's, which left much to be desired. The atmosphere inside the new grand cherokee is light, comfortable, and more enveloping than the previous model, more bolted in than hanging on from the driver's perspective, with lots of seat adjustment, excellent outward vision around the relatively slim posts, and all the switches and controls clearly labeled and easy to find and use.  for the first time, a jeep can be married to the engine that put chrysler back on the map, the 5. 7-liter hemi. It's particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. However, we found the 4. 7-liter v8 worked great. The standard v6 is a vast improvement over jeep's old inline-6. A new suspension gives the grand cherokee much better handling, leaning less in corners, along with better ride quality. Its turning radius is tighter, too, good when driving off road or in crowded parking lots.  jeep engineers have come up with a larger, edgier and more macho suv with an engine that's among the most powerful in the segment. The basic laredo comes standard with a 210-horsepower 3. 7-liter v6 and a five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. A 4. 7-liter v8 or 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is available for both laredo and limited. Side curtain air bags are optional.  a dynamic handling system (dhs) is available as part of the quadra-drive ii 4x4 system on late-2005 hemi models. Dhs reduces body roll, or lean, when cornering, resulting in sportier handling. An electronic stability program (esp) is also available, and comes packaged with the hemi.  options include gps navigation built into the radio 1,200), a rear-seat dvd entertainment system, a trailer tow package 255), boston acoustics audio, uconnect hands-free communication system 275), smart beam headlamps that sense the available natural light and adjust accordingly, and rear park assist 1,200). The traditional off-road package 420) with tow hooks is available, along with chromed alloy wheels, and an engine block heater for winter trekking. On the limited model, the gauges are surrounded by chrome rings.  the cargo area features a reversible load floor panel that flips over on itself to create a shallow container, for more versatility in the rear storage compartment. As a system, the new interior is far better organized, more light in feeling and color, and altogether more roomy than the previous version, which had been around since 1993. driving impressionto be honest, we didn't like the old grand cherokee very much, because we never thought it was very grand. It was small inside, with a dark, confusing interior, too much plastic, really cheap seats, and not much cargo space, but always fun off-road. This new grand cherokee erases all the bad stuff about the old version, but keeps the mountain-goat-like off-road performance, finally becoming grand in the process.  the basic laredo comes standard with the chrysler-made 210-horsepower single-overhead-cam 3. 7-liter v6, borrowed from its sister trucks, the jeep liberty and dodge ram, with its own five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. The 3. 7 replaces the tired, old 4-liter inline six engine that was in the last grand cherokee and was a relic from american motors' inventory of 25 years ago (still used in the wrangler). The v6 gets an epa-rated 16/21 mpg city/highway, while the v8s get 14/21. It's coupled with new lighter, more compact and more precise power rack-and-pinion steering that's reasonably quick and accurate, and nicely weighted. There seemed to be a more flatfooted, glued-down attitude with this big jeep, with far less body roll than the previous model, which had a bit of body roll built into it that paid some comfort dividends off-road. This one is just as comfortable on- and off-road without it.  front suspension travel is increased by almost 10 percent over the previous grand cherokee, and the new steering geometry yields a tighter turning circle, which counts heavily off road. A new five-link rear suspension combined with the new steering and new front suspension produced a boulevard ride, and cornering prowess, like no other jeep in history, an enormous improvement. We don't usually go around flinging 4500-pound suvs into corners, but this one invited a little bad behavior, which was very rewarding within the limits of its tires. A long overdue redesign, worth the wait. introductionthe 1984 jeep cherokee arguably invented the small suv, and it ruled for 17 years until its slot was taken by the 2001 jeep liberty. Now it's back in the lineup. Cherokee looks cool again. Called the tigershark multiair 2 i-4, it makes 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque, with fuel mileage epa-rated at 21/28 mpg city/highway. We got 23. 4 on the highway and winding mountain two-lanes.  the optional engine is a 3. 2-liter pentastar v6, making its debut in the cherokee. It's derived from the 3. 6-liter that's been one of ward's 10 best engines for the last three years. It makes 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque and it's epa-rated at 19/27 mpg city/highway. We got 18. 1 mpg in a 4x4 model. The advantage to the v6 is towing, rated to 4500 pounds (best in class says jeep) versus 2000 pounds for the i4. However it's a tough call, because the v6 is only a couple mpg thirstier.  both engines are aided by a new 9-speed automatic transmission, standard in all cherokees. It's a compact marvel, raising the regular-car bar for tranny construction and packaging, not to mention the electronic and mechanical complexities of high-speed meshing of spinning steel gears. First gear is an aggressive 4. 71:1 for low-end performance, while 6, 7, 8 and 9 are all overdrives for the highway, to increase fuel mileage and lower noise and vibration. Ninth gear is a super overdrive, at 0. 48:1.  the off-road oriented trailhawk will do amazing climbing and descending things, while looking too good to be able to do those things. Floods, blizzards, earthquakes, typhoons and the outback are no worries mate. It breaks new ground with electronic descent control. With its tall 4. 7:1 ratio for first gear, the crawl ratio of 56:1 is nearly as high as the wrangler's.  there are three new 4wd systems introduced in the cherokee: active drive i, with a one-speed power transfer unit; active drive ii with two-speed ptu and low range (it's towable); and active drive lock with two-speed ptu, low range and locking rear differential. The basic active drive i is all-wheel drive, distributing some but not a lot of drive to the rear wheels when needed.  the selec-terrain traction control system has five modes: auto, snow, sport, sand/mud, and rock. There's a new independent suspension to go with increased torsional rigidity in the frame. There are significant standard extras, like led headlamps and daytime running lights, fold-flat front passenger seat with storage, and more.  as for looks, it sure doesn't get lost in the suv crowd. Its designers delivered style and distinction while enhancing the iconic image. Other suvs dream of looking like the new cherokee. The cherokee latitude is less blingy than the cherokee limited. Trailhawk looks best because it's tough, with raised suspension, overfenders and painted tow hooks. It says jeep the loudest.  the interior is stylish and utilitarian, both. Everything has a function, while being easy to reach and operate. There are clear digital gauges between the speedometer and tach, lit organic white. Navigation on the touch screen is easy to read, with basic buttons. We wish the radio had a dial.  the latitude standard cloth seats are rugged and sporty, and fit just right. The 40. 3 inches of rear legroom is nearly 2 inches more than big brother grand cherokee, due mostly to seat height. The 60/40 rear seats fold flat in a heartbeat.  behind the wheel, it feels tight. Smooth and solid with a firm ride. The v6 has a bit of engine noise, with kick-butt acceleration. The ride is softer except for undulations, while speed bumps are gentler. The v6 just feels bigger.  at the introduction of the new cherokee, we were given the opportunity for comparison spins in a honda crv, toyota rav4, and ford escape. The cherokee turned them into vanilla. Trailhawk equipment levels are similar to those of limited, though trailhawk comes with seats trimmed in cloth, leather and vinyl.  safety equipment standard on all models includes 10 airbags, electronic stability control and abs. Optional safety features included parksense parallel/perpendicular park assist, adaptive cruise control-plus, forward collision warning-plus, lanesense lane departure warning-plus; 9-1-1 assist call; esc; electronic roll mitigation; blind-spot monitoring; rear cross path detection; parkview rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines. walkaroundthe all-new cherokee doesn't get lost in the suv crowd. It delivers style and distinction while clearly being a jeep. Maybe best expressed by the grille, the seven jeep slugs backed by eggcrate, one vertical piece with the aluminum hood, a unique design described by jeep as waterfall. The hood has a hump as on a muscle car, made into a flat-black wedge on the trailhawk. The slugs are bright chrome in every model but the trailhawk, where the eggcrate is black, changing the car's presence. All around, the trailhawk with its rugged touches (wheels, tires, fender flares, tow hooks) looks more jeepish.  other suvs dream of looking like the new cherokee. Sweet little slits that look like headlamps are actually led daytime running lights with turn signals, while the projector headlamps rise in black fascia over the front bumper, like bugeyes. They're so small they look more like foglights, while the foglights themselves are even smaller, down at the bottom corners of the fascia, again eggcrate black on the trailhawk.  the latitude is less blingy than the limited, and therefore better looking.  there are trapezoidal wheel arches, with sculpted sides leading back to where the cherokee tries hard but struggles. There's a big fat horizontal concave in the liftgate, reducing the inherent slab but obscuring the jeep identity. The 4x4 models have more black fascia in the rear, which tweaks some style out of the slab. Big led horizontal taillamps extend into the glass with a top-heavy touch that's apparently aerodynamic. interiortight, comfortable, everything a function, easy to reach, stylish. They nailed it.  the jeep cherokee latitude comes with cloth seats on the are rugged and sporty, fit just right. Perforated leather seats in place of the cloth in the limited.
